I am a musicologist who writes about the musical canon, the political and ideological associations of music, and the European and American avant-garde after 1945. I have been teaching in the Department of Music at Harvard University since 2003. Before that, I lived in Switzerland from 1994-2003, where I was professor at the University of Basel. I am on the advisory boards of the Paul Sacher Stiftung (Basel), the Musikhochschule (Basel), and the editorial board of Archiv für Musikwissenschaft. Education
