Laughter is from Mars: Science Fiction as Satire. Under provisional contract, Princeton U. P. for 2023. From Gulliver’s Travels on, science fiction has aimed to elicit implicitly or explicitly anti-anthropocentric laughter. Four crucial modes, emerging and developing at various times and under various conditions, have come to define the genre: satire, philosophical puzzles, comedy, and the ludic.
