About

I am an independent researcher in Disability Studies and Sociology of Religion. I completed a PhD in Study of Religions at SOAS, University of London in 2019. My book At the Gates: Disability, Justice and the Churches (2022, co-written with Emily Richardson) shares disabled Christians’ stories from my PhD research with a broad audience. I have taught courses in the Study of Religions, Research Methods and Gender Studies. Alongside ongoing research into disability, churches and Christianity, I work as a researcher in the voluntary sector and as a disability equality trainer.

My PhD was a qualitative participatory research study into the experiences of disabled Christians in churches, together with analysis of the discourses and ideologies of disability that participants encountered in church settings and in relation to the Bible, and how these relate to normalcy, the body and Foucault’s theory of the pastoral model.

Call for Papers – Space for Interpretation: Reclaiming Disabled Power in Narratives of Belief (Journal of Literary and Cultural Disability Studies)

Despite the interest from disability scholars in many domains of society, there has been very little research on disabled people’s experiences of religion and belief in disability studies (Lewis, 2007, Creamer, 2006)… Boundaries exclude, and so in this special issue of the Journal of Literary and Cultural Disability Studies, we will discuss the importance of creating spaces that allow disabled believers to share knowledge from socially located perspectives, in contrast with those promoted by traditional textual interpretations, theological discourses or broader religious narratives. Through reframing and challenging the power relations at work in faith communities and their theological traditions regarding disability we will question the positioning of disabled believers of various faiths as marginal in faith communities and in wider theological and interpretive conversations, by centering disabled voices and experiences within our fields of enquiry.
