In spring 2020, the University of Vienna will establish the Research Center for the History of Transformations (RECET), funded by the Wittgenstein award 2019 for Philipp Ther (granted by the FWF). The center takes the 1989 upheaval in Central and Eastern Europe as a starting point for European and global comparisons of labor relations, the history of enterprises, social movements and volunteerism as well as economic thinking and reform policies. Furthermore, it aims to analyse the social and political consequences of these developments, among them the intensifying work migration and the emergence of right-wing populist, authoritarian and extremist movements. RECET is therefore hiring:

Senior Scientist/Scientific Director
Duration of employment: 6 years
Extent of Employment: 40 hours/week
Job grading in accordance with collective bargaining agreement: §48 VwGr. B1 lit. b (postdoc)(EUR 3.803,90 gross) with relevant work experience determining the assignment to a particular salary grade.Job Description: The Senior Scientist/Scientific Director represents RECET towards the public; he/she has a leading function in shaping the research program, guiding the staff, filing applications for external project funding and other activities of the center. The Scientific Director is expected to develop and lead his/her own research project. A teaching load of 4 hours/semester is required by the contract. The contract is limited to 6 years, with a tenure track option after a successful evaluation. We are willing to approve an overpayment of the salary according to the collective wage agreement if the applicant has relevant expertise.
Your Profile: We are looking for a senior postdoc with a degree in history (or a related field of the social sciences), who has graduated at least four years ago and has relevant academic working experience at a university. His/her dissertation has received excellent reviews and is published at a renowned publishing house (preferably a renowned English-language University Press). Applicants must have an excellent command of German and English, and must have published in both languages; they also have to be proficient in at least one Eastern European language verbally and in writing. Very good knowledge of at least one west- or south European language and/or basic knowledge of an East Asian language would be an asset.

IVa (EUR 2.614,30 gross) with relevant work experience determining the assignment to a particular salary grade.Job Description: The Managing Director is responsible for all administrative tasks, the budget and the staff of RECET (in accordance with the Senior Scientist/Scientific Director). He/She is in charge of external communication, especially social media, and institutional fundraising. We expect a team-based and structured work approach as well as a high degree of proactivity, goal orientation, organizational talent and communication skills. We are willing to approve an overpayment of the salary according to the collective wage agreement if the applicant has relevant expertise.
Your Profile: A degree in contemporary history or a related field is required (at least MA). Applicants should have an excellent command of German, English, and at least one Eastern European language. We are looking for applicants with several years of management experience, either in a science-related field or an NGO, as well as experience with institutional and project-related fundraising and in media communication (especially social media). A PhD in contemporary history would be an asset.

B1 lit. b (postdoc) (EUR 3.803,90 gross for 40 hours) with relevant work experience determining the assignment to a particular salary grade.Job Description: The call for applications addresses historians as well as scholars from related social sciences who work with a historical dimension. Successful applicants will contribute to one or two of the research foci (labor history and relations in a global comparative perspective/economic thinking and reform policies in a socio-historical dimension/social movements and volunteerism/European and global labor migration); especially by organizing conferences, publications and cooperation with exterior partners. It is expected to continue newly raised third-party funded projects at RECET, thereby contributing to the profile of the center. If possible, they should strive to write a habilitation thesis or a second book as part of their employment at RECET. We want to hire up to three post-docs; one full-time and two part-time contracts are possible.
Your Profile: Applicants are required to hold a PhD in history or a related discipline of the social sciences (sociology, social and cultural anthropology, political science, economics), obtained no more than three years ago. Applicants should have published in academic journals, and are required to have an excellent command of English and German; they also have to be proficient in at least one Eastern European language. Additional knowledge of an East-Asian language as well as research experience at the crossroads of history and social sciences would be an asset.
