    Tutor/Activity Guide – Russian
    Summer Intensive Language Program (SILP)
    Middlebury Institute of International Studies at Monterey Main Campus
    Dates: June 11 – August 9, 2017
    Position Summary: Under the direct supervision of Language Program Coordinators, Tutors/Activity Guides assist Summer Intensive Language Program (SILP) students in their academic coursework outside of class (10+ hours/week) and facilitate co-curricular activities (5-10 hours/week). We are looking for qualified candidates to perform the combined role of Tutor/Activity Guide in all five SILP languages: Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, and Spanish.

     
    Responsibilities:
    There are two components to the position as follows:
    Tutor
    Conduct one-on-one and small group tutoring sessions with students
    Create a tutoring schedule based on student input, to include drop-in hours and sign-up sessions
    Communicate with SILP administration in regards to flow and student demand of the tutoring sessions
    Become familiar with curriculum and assignments for each of the course sections
    Coordinate with faculty and administration to ensure optimum assistance to students
    Occasionally co-teach classes with program faculty
    Prepare supplementary materials to be used during tutorial sessions
    Attend student orientation meeting and assist with placement testing as necessary
    Attend other program meetings as necessary
    Complete and submit an end-of-program feedback sheet

     

    Activity Guide
    Develop and actively participate in creative and engaging cultural and social activities in the target language
    Promote enthusiasm and interaction among students and faculty
    Organize a means of effective communication with students and faculty to promote activities and log information (i.e. blog, wiki. Facebook page, etc.)
    Coordinate with instructors to help integrate co-curricular activities into the curriculum and create relevant activities that coincide with classroom topics/themes
    Attend all required meetings, student events, and cross-program activities
    Participate in pre-program activities workshop/training
    Arrange with Language Coordinator regarding the tracking of activity costs
    Complete a few necessary administrative duties

     
    General Responsibilities
    Schedule to be set in coordination with the administration. Typically, tutoring takes place during afternoons and activities take place during weekday lunchtimes, late afternoons, evenings, or occasionally on weekends.

     
    Qualifications:
    Education
    B.A. with a foreign language major or equivalent; M.A. in foreign language teaching or equivalent (in progress or completed) preferred
    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
    Advanced-level fluency in the target language
    Experience
    One to three years experience tutoring and/or working with foreign language learners
    Experience organizing and facilitating group events
    Physical Demands
    The Middlebury Institute of International Studies at Monterey maintains a smoke-free workplace and complies with the Federal Drug-Free Schools and Communities Act and Drug-Free Workplace Act.

     
    Essential job functions require ability to sit for extended periods of time, walk, bend, climb, push/pull, lift and carry up to 25 pounds occasionally. Also requires fine dexterity and ability to grasp, i.e. for writing and word processing/data entry.
