About the Position:
The Institute of European, Russian and Eurasian Studies invites applications from qualified candidates for an advanced preliminary (tenure-track) or tenured appointment as the McMillan Chair in Russian Studies, with a research and teaching focus on Russian politics, at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor (the level of appointment will depend on the qualifications of the successful candidate). The position has an anticipated start date of July 1, 2020 (a later start date may be considered).
The McMillan Chair is an endowed, permanent position created through the generosity of Carl McMillan, long-time faculty member and former Institute director. It is designed to host a transformative, world-class specialist who will strengthen EURUS’ position as a national and international leader in the research of modern Russia. The McMillan Chair will receive start-up funds of $10 000 for the first five years of the position.
The successful candidate will bring an active research agenda, with a record of quality publications commensurate with career level, as well as teaching and administrative experience. Attributes will include a track record of successful grant funding and a network of academic contacts in Russia and the West. Teaching responsibilities comprise advanced undergraduate/graduate seminars, interdisciplinary surveys at the undergraduate and MA level, and graduate supervisions. The candidate should be able to work effectively in an interdisciplinary context and within team teaching arrangements.
About the Academic Unit:
The Institute of European, Russian and Eurasian Studies is a national and international leader in teaching and research. It began in 1971 as the Institute of Soviet and East European Studies. Today, EURUS is a dynamic, interdisciplinary program. Its members maintain prolific research profiles and excellent teaching standards (https://carleton.ca/eurus/faculty-and-staff/). Faculty members have significant freedom to design courses in their area of specialty. Located in Canada’s capital, the Institute hosts important policy conferences and workshops with Global Affairs Canada, Public Safety Canada and other government departments, as well as the diplomatic community.
Qualifications:
Applicants must hold a Ph. D. in Political Science or a related discipline (e.g. Political Economy, Political Sociology, International Affairs), with a research and teaching focus on Russia. They will have an established research agenda and a strong record of teaching.
