    The Leibniz Institute of European History (IEG) in Mainz is an independent research institute within the Leibniz Association. It conducts research on the religious, political, social and cultural foundations of Europe in the early modern and modern period and runs an international fellowship program. As a member of the Mainz Centre for Digitality in the Humanities and Cultural Studies (mainzed), the IEG is committed to open access publications and participates in the development of digital research infrastructures (http://www.ieg-mainz.de). For its Digital Humanities Lab the IEG invites applications for

    3 postdoctoral positions (research associates) in digital historical research for the duration of five years from January 1, 2019.

    Job profile

    1. The position holders each carry out their own research project that uses digital humanities methods to investigate a particular aspect of the IEG’s research program on “Negotiating differences in early modern and modern Europe” (https://tinyurl.com/yd4k7mmv).

    2. With their research project, the position holders contribute to one of the three research areas of the IEG and support their colleagues (i.e. researchers of the history of religion and of European history) in the application of digital tools and methods.

    3. In the IEG’s Digital Humanities Lab IEG and in the context of mainzed, the position holders are involved in the cooperative development of innovative methods for the formal modeling of humanities issues. They are actively involved in the Master’s program “Digital Methodology in the Humanities and Cultural Studies” in Mainz.

    4. Position holders contribute to the development and enhancement of digital research infrastructures in regional, national and European networks.

    Requirements
    • University degree, either in
    ○ Digital Humanities or in
    ○ Computer science with proven competence in the humanities (especially in religious history or history) or in
    ○ The history of religion/theology or history, each with proven computational skills
    • PhD (to be completed before taking up the position)
    • Specialist DH-expertise, proven through publications and project experience, in either
    ○ Natural Language Processing (with Semantic Web technologies) or
    ○ Semantic Web technologies (with network analysis) or
    ○ Historical Geoinformation Systems (GIS)
    • Internationally oriented academic track
    • Proven ability to cooperate and work in a team
    • Good knowledge of German and English, if applicable further project-related language skills
