    The Department of History at Christopher Newport University invites applications for the position of Lecturer in History, effective August 2018. This position is a full-time, non-tenure-track appointment with a nominal teaching load of 4-4. The successful candidate will teach World History or American History Survey classes, upper level courses in area of research specialization, History Pedagogy at the graduate level, and supervise student teachers in the spring semester who are seeking secondary certification. This position requires the successful candidate to have demonstrated experience in secondary school teaching. The Ph.D. in History or relevant terminal degree is required for this appointment. Individuals who are ABD and will not hold the Ph.D. by the time of appointment may be considered for appointment at the rank of Instructor. Phi Beta Kappa membership is highly desirable.

    The Department of History at Christopher Newport University is composed of 16 faculty and has consistently graduated 60-80 majors per academic year. Located in McMurran Hall, the department is notable for its dedicated teachers who are also exceptional scholars. Departmental faculty have varied intellectual interests and their specializations cover temporally history from the Ancient world to the Modern, with regional coverage of Asia, the Middle East and North Africa, Europe, Latin America and the United States. History students at CNU are exceptionally talented, often seeking challenges and opportunities to participate in undergraduate research with faculty in the department. History faculty also regularly lead study abroad trips during the academic year and the summer. The department houses the CNU Public History Center which connects many students with regional museums, historical sites, and local archaeological projects so that they can earn credit through internships.
