The American Council of Learned Societies Opens 2021 Leading Edge Fellowship Competition for Recent PhDs in the Humanities and Humanistic Social Sciences
Program Partners Early Career Scholars
with Nonprofit Organizations Advancing Social Justice
The American Council of Learned Societies (ACLS) announces the third competition for the Leading Edge Fellowship, made possible by the generous support of The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.The Leading Edge Fellowship program provides one-year fellowships to recent humanities PhDs as they pursue publicly engaged projects that advance social justice and equity in communities across the United States. The projects are designed to draw on the humanistic skills, capacities, and frameworks developed in the course of earning a PhD in the humanities.
In this competition, ACLS will place up to 41 recent PhDs with participating nonprofit organizations across the country including the National Conference on Citizenship, the Hurston/Wright Foundation, Hunger Free America, and Common Justice. Each Leading Edge Fellow will receive a $60,000 stipend, as well as health insurance and professional development funding. Fellows will lead substantive, community-engaged projects for their host organizations on issues of criminal justice reform and mass incarceration, racial discrimination and economic inequality, and access to childcare, food security, and voting rights. The fellows also will participate in a variety of professional development and networking activities designed to help translate the experiences of their 12-month placements into future work in the academy and beyond.
