• DEVELOPING INTEREST IN POETRY AMONG ELEMENTARY LEARNERS: MANUAL FOR INTERESTING POETRY INSTRUCTION

    Abstract:
    This study aimed to analyze and pinpoint young learners’ preferences and interest in reading and in poetry to make it as basis in developing a manual in improving poetry instruction. The quantitative descriptive design using the survey method was used because the study aimed to discover and describe Grade 5 learners’ reading and poetry interest and preferences. Data were gathered from 80 pupils in Grade 5 of Felipe G. Calderon Elementary School, Tondo, Manila. A questionnaire survey was administered to the pupil-respondents using the 5-point Likert Scale with the following rating: Very High (5), High (4), Average (3), Low (2), and Very Low (1) to determine their level of interest in reading and in poetry. The findings revealed that Grade 5 pupils have an “Average” level of interest both in reading and poetry. Storybooks are their most preferred reading material while they showed less interest in reading poems though when provided with suitable materials, they would prefer poems about fantasy and those with rhymes. Subsequently, they would want their teachers to teach poetry using silent reading and reading aloud. Ultimately, they lose interest and focus if the material is difficult for them. Therefore, to make young learners become interested in reading, parents and teachers should expose them to reading materials that are suitable, relatable, and within their level of understanding at a very young age to develop intrinsic and permanent desire to read.
