- Abstract:
- Aesthetic engagement is a term that has come into increasing prominence in aesthetic discourse. It identifies an understanding of aesthetic experience, appreciation, and value characterized by active participation in the perceptual process and by the continuity and reciprocity of the central factors in aesthetic appreciation. The concept of aesthetic engagement was elaborated, beginning in the late 1960s, in a series of papers and books, first in relation to the contemporary arts, and then with particular attention to the aesthetics of environment. This essay offers an account of its background and history, its theoretical elaboration, and its applications.
