- Abstract:
- What is the one-shot if not a rehearsal for research? Drawing on Games for Actors and Non-Actors, this poster will examine how using non-traditional teaching resources can transform classroom practice. Leveraging what students already know about the search process, these rehearsals prepare students to perform research the same way a theatrical rehearsal prepares actors for a show. Students get general, transferable skills but are also equipped to work within the confines of a particular course. Founded on the principle that art should teach the audience to make art so that all can create together, Theatre of the Oppressed lends itself to breaking down the hierarchies of the one-shot instruction session. This poster will cover examples of exercises from Boal’s seminal text as the foundation for one-shot instruction activities. In particular, the author will explore analytical rehearsals and Image Theatre models and dynamisations. Readers will take away practical ideas for building rehearsal techniques into their classroom and an awareness of performance as pedagogy.
