    Abstract:
Duchess Anna Amalia (1739-1807) was a central figure in the duchies of Weimar and Eisenach for over fifty years - as wife of the reigning duke, then as custodial regent and finally as mother of the reigning duke. The article comes to the conclusion that the duchess could barely affect the emergence of the configuration that has been referred to in research for some years as the "Ereignis Weimar-Jena". Rather, Anna Amalia appears - as a princess at the end of the Old Reich, rooted in dynastic thinking, yet taken with sensitive rhetoric and the bourgeois ideal of friendship, as long as these remained in the imaginary space of correspondence and journals; - as a princess who denied her younger son a self-determined life, and suffered herself from the constraints of court life; - as a princess who forbade herself flattery, and yet was a virtuoso at playing the game of favour and deprivation of debt; as a princess who did not have to observe any elaborate ceremonial at her widow's court, but who always observed the etiquette of behaviour befitting her rank; - as a versatile lover of the arts and a dilettante who translated Aristophanes and - in her own opinion - had only an imperfect command of German. Anna Amalia was neither a "pioneer of Weimar Classicism" nor a "founder of the Weimar court of the Muses", but in all her facets a fascinating person of rank from the late phase of the Ancien Régime.
