- Abstract:
- Responding to the prompt, “How do library services and librarians represent the ‘voices’ and rights of all children and adolescents and should librarians actively support children’s and adolescent’s social justice?”, this essay positively argues that librarians should actively support social justice and explores this and how library services and librarians represent youth’s voices and rights are discussed through a focus on teens and Teen Advisory Boards (TABs). This essay first explores why and sets the foundation as to which TABs sit upon – knowingly or unknowingly – by (1) defining a series of terms, (2) developing an understanding of the UN’s Convention on the Rights of a Child’s articles and Article 12 which simply, but powerfully states that youth should be listened to, and (3) an exploration of key points in understanding and studying adolescents’ development and youth empowerment. Then the how is explored in two ways: (1) shifting perceptions of teens and librarians and (2) creating Teen Advisory Boards – both asserted as the way libraries have and can continue to represent youth voices and rights. The goals of UNCRC’s Article 12, youth empowerment approaches and practices, and libraries’ efforts towards teen engagement are all in alignment with each other and the hybrid of theoretical understandings and practical applications can uniquely position Teen Advisory Boards to continue offering a host of benefits for youth, libraries, and their communities.
