- Abstract:
- Beginning with an understanding of how and why various bibliographic metadata tools develop, emerge, and continue to evolve and then moving to focus on the origins, purposes, and current issues of FRBR, IFLA-IRM, RDA, and BIBFRAME, this essay seeks to set a brief, yet satisfactory understanding of these bibliographic metadata tools. With the conceptual frameworks of FRBR and IFLA-IRM, the cataloguing code rules of RDA, and the emerging standards of BIBFRAME, bibliographic metadata is well-positioned to bring cataloguing into an increasingly digital, connected, and complex information world while preparing for the unknown, but inevitable future adaptations. Although these developments and changes can also lead to issues of lack of consistency or universality, the gap of funding, the delay in proper and timely training, and general skepticism for new tools among other concerns, this essay maintains that it is essential for bibliographic metadata to continually evolve to best meet the needs of the library field and its users.
