    Abstract:
_____________________________________________________________________________________ English abstract: An important subject in Robertson Davies's novel 'The Manticore' is the protagonist (David Staunton)'s search for a relationship with the father. Staunton is a solitary and alcoholic lawyer, oppressed by his wealthy family and by his being disinherited. But there can be more than one father, in reality or in imagination. And one must wonder who are one's various imaginary fathers—the chosen ones and those not chosen, because (pace Staunton) this does not seem to be primarily a matter of choice, but rather of inevitability. And if we did choose, the choice was inevitable, given the person we were at a given moment.
