    Abstract:
Wang, LK and Wang, MHS (2022). Urban area sludge treatment using pressurized oxygenation-ozonation, dissolved gas flotation and dewatering. In: "Environmental Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM)", Wang, LK, Wang, MHS, and Pankivskyi, YI (editors). Volume 2022, Number 10B, October 2022; pp.51. Lenox Institute Press, Auburndale, MA, USA ..........An innovative sludge treatment system suitable for urban WWTPs is introduced. The unit processes of the system include: sludge grinding, acidification, pressurized oxygenation-ozonation (Oxyozosynthesis), dissolved gas flotation (DGF) thickening, and press dewatering. Also introduced are: the process inventor, equipment manufacturer, each individual unit process, entire innovative sludge treatment process system, and the case history and overall system performance data of West New York WWTP. The Oxyozosynthesis sludge treatment and disposal system will be extremely competitive under the following conditions: (1) ocean dumping is not allowed; (2) the Federal and state regulations on disposal of sludge on land are very stringent, and the treated sludge must be stabilized, and safe for crop land disposal; (3) land is not available for sludge thickening in lagoons and dewatering on drying beds; (4) incineration which creates some air pollution is not allowed in urban areas with many high rise buildings; (5) wet air oxidation which creates some odor problems is not allowed in urban areas or cannot be afforded in rural areas; (6) distance is too far to transport sludge to another plant or site for disposal; (7) no other process systems are more cost-effective or more efficient than the Oxyozosynthesis sludge treatment and disposal system; and (8) there are engineering demonstration grants available encouraging testing and/or using innovative sludge disposal technology.
