- Abstract:
- Without a formal center for teaching and learning, both faculty and librarians struggled to develop cohesive curricula together and embed library resources into classroom coursework. This presentation details the efforts of two instruction librarians in developing a faculty brown bag workshop series to fill this need at their institution. In the workshop series, librarians introduced faculty to foundational pedagogical literature in monthly discussion groups. Some of the subjects covered include backward design, scaffolding, activities and gamification, feminist pedagogy, and authentic learning, among others. Faculty and staff from various departments gathered to discuss their challenges and successes in implementing new ideas in their classrooms. Moreover, the series provided a platform for the librarians to demonstrate their own interests, expertise, and vision for an information literacy curriculum. As a result, professional relationships and collaborations formed (or strengthened) across campus under shared goals for improving student learning outcomes. After providing an overview of the planning, promotion, execution, outcomes, and critical reflections from this series, the presenters will challenge attendees to consider strategies for adapting and implementing similar pedagogical workshops at their own institutions. Presented as part of the "Innovative Instructions: Strategies and Opportunities for Unique Instructional Needs" panel.
