- Abstract:
- The University of Utah's Marriott Library introduced VR systems to patrons in 2016. Back then, set-up and use required considerable technical know-how and there were few applications of the technology beyond entertainment and passive education. VR systems today are intuitive, relatively inexpensive, and can be applied to learning environments, workplace productivity, and research opportunities. During the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic, the entire Creativity & Innovation Services department was enlisted to put those assertions to the test. Connecting with one another on Oculus Quest headsets from our individual homes, seven library faculty and staff experimented with a variety of VR applications to attend staff meetings, host a team retreat, engage in team building activities, and collaboratively design a new workspace that was built in the Marriott Library during the 2021-2022 academic year. This poster session will document the challenges, learning curves, and successes of these experiments. It will also provide best practices for librarians who would like to adopt this visually immersive tool into their own work environment. Along with the poster, I will have several working VR headsets available for attendees to view apps and virtual spaces used in these experiments.
