    Abstract:
Introduction: During general anesthesia, airway control is usually by laryngoscopy and endotracheal intubation, which results in mechanical stimulation. Laryngoscopy and endotracheal intubation are almost always associated with increased blood pressure and increased heart rate. Increased blood pressure and heart rate due to laryngoscopy and intubation may lead to myocardial ischemia, cerebral hemorrhage, and death in susceptible patients. Various drug agents have been used to prevent these responses, including adrenergic blockers, vasodilators, calcium channel blockers, and lidocaine. Clonidine is a α2-adrenoceptor agonist that has analgesic, anti-anxiety, anti-chills, and anti-inflammatory effects. Gabapentin is a gamma aminobutyric acid analogue that is primarily used to treat seizures, neuropathic pain, and hot flashes. The action of gabapentin in attenuating the response to laryngoscopy and intubation-induced hypertension is unknown.
