The hand, versatile instrument in non-verbal communication, not only contributed to the success of the ancient orators - especially with Cicero - but also it took part to the formation of an autonomous declamatory actio. The second circumstance could only occur through a process of delegitimization of the prehensile organ as an active tool of communication.
