- Abstract:
- This essay critically evaluates the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders: Fifth Edition (DSM-5) as an example of a taxonomical information organisation tool for psychiatry. We explore the history of the DSM; the contexts in which it is used; previous versions of the DSM; a description of the tool, its structure and contents and how it is updated and managed, and; the ethical and critical issues discussions that exist with specific regards to the classification and coding system the manual utilises, both in the medical and psychiatric communities that use the tool for diagnosing and managing mental health conditions, and with regards to the effect the classification system has on the ‘end users’ - patients.
