- Jean de la Taille's "Saül le furieux" (1562) has been described as "the most dramatic play produced by the French Renaissance," and the author's preface to the play in the printed edition of 1572, "De l'Art de la Tragedie," as "certainly the best theoretical essay on the theatre written in France before the classical period." These estimates by the editor of a modern edition of La Taille's tragedies might be hyperbolic, but they are sufficient, I think, to justify an English translation of both the play and the preface. The translation offered here is based on the French editions prepared by Elliott Forsyth (Paris, 1968), and Kathleen M. Hall and C. N. Smith (London, 1972).
