    Abstract:
This presentation is part of panel #228 "Compartir lo que nos une. Digitizing and Curating Colonial Records from the Caribbean and Central and South America for Public Outreach" for the Digital Humanities 2020 conference. The presentation goes beyond digitization to discuss what happens after digitization is completed. Considering that the newspapers were part of the colonial information apparatus, how do we read against the grain to locate and reveal marginalized voices hidden in the digitized pages? We will discuss public outreach initiatives to engage the public with "runaway ads" about the enslaved in colonial newspapers and we will share thoughts and lessons learned.
