    Abstract:
    In 1975, at the time of the independence of the last large colonies, the Portuguese government decided to maintain the main public structure of colonial research, as an instrument of cooperation and diplomacy, changing its name to Instituto de Investigação Científica Tropical. Disconnected from its primitive mission and with a very heavy and costly structure, this Institute was extinguished in 2015 and incorporated in the University of Lisbon. In this process, the University integrated a considerable heritage, including historical-scientific collections and a Tropical Botanical Garden, which began to be managed jointly with the National Museum of Natural History and Science (MUHNAC) / Museums of the University of Lisbon. This article presents the main guidelines for the preservation and valorisation of this heritage in the development of a program of scientific, educational, cultural and recreational activities, in the context of the diffusion of culture on the history of science and technology in the Portuguese discoveries, Expansion and colonization.
