    Abstract:
An essay written for the catalog for the exhibition, "Benga: Kenyan Kaleidoscope" (Bureau Sepän). Originally written in English; French translation by Gabriella Seemann. Abstract from the catalog: Se référant à une performance musicale à laquelle il a assisté et impliquant l’un des musiciens les plus en vue du Kenya, Dan Aceda, dans cet essai, ce professeur de la New York University à Abu Dhabi interpelle les tentatives actuelles au Kenya de certains musiciens de définir un genre musical kényan historiquement cohérent, et qui se cristalliserait autour de la notion de «Benga». Focusing on a music performance he attended and involving one of Kenya’s most prominent musician, Dan Aceda, in this essay, the NYU Abu Dhabi Professor discusses the existing current attempts by Kenyan musicians to define a historically coherent Kenyan music genre, which would crystalize around the notion of “Benga”.
