- Abstract:
- One of the most striking elements in the drama plays dealing with a Dionysiac subject is, perhaps, costume, as part of role as well as nature change, which provides the basis both for the maenadism and androgyny of Dionysus. This article aims to be a revision about this phenomenon, cross-dressing, from the classic theater plays with Dionysiac theme, Euripides’ Bacchae and Aristophanes’ Frogs; to its survival in later ages, with special attention to the Byzantine and later times. In addition to this, the influence of this phenomenon and how it is reflected in several authors that refer to cross-dressing as one of the characteristic elements of the Dionysiac rites is observed.
